It may be concluded that the new prostaglandin E analogues now available for clinical trials are highly effective in terminating early pregnancy and are superior to previously used PGF analogues with regard to side-effects, even if administered by non-invasive routes. The efficacy and safety of the treatment seems good enough to allow selftreatment at home. In the first study in which this possibility was evaluated the efficacy and acceptability was good, at least in wellinformed patients. It may now be appropriate to initiate studies which randomly compare vacuum aspiration with the non-surgical procedures.
